PAUL CHALEFF

Paul Chaleff has been recognized as a pioneer of the resurgence of wood firing in America as well as for large-scale ceramic sculpture. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington, DC the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Yale Universtiy Art Gallery, the Princeton Art Museum as well as over twenty other museum and public collections thoughout the US and abroad.

Born in the Bronx, NY in 1947, Paul Chaleff received his MFA from the City University of New York in 1971. He is known for working with clay both in pottery and sculpture. In the mid-1970’s he spent two years studying in Japan and returned to New York where he pioneered the use of the wood-burning kiln in the US. From 1989 until 2001 he collaborated with Sir Anthony CAro on a series of large clay sculptures. With 55 on-person shows and participation in over 200 group exhibitions, Paul has exhibited and lectured extensively throughout the US, Asia and Europe.

Paul Chaleff is presently Professor of Fine Arts at Hofstra University in New York where he directs the ceramics program. His studio and home are located in Ancram, New York. Paul is married to Haesook Kim, Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Long Island University, Brooklyn. He has a son Gabriel Chaleff and a stepdaughter, Shilla Kim Parker.
